CS West San Juans Cruise 2015 Report
June 21 - 30


The weather was beautiful as 6 boats - 5 CS and 1 Quanta - toured the San Juans together.

Thanks to Don Spinar for organizing the cruise. Great job!

Note:  Wind Dancer managed to fit 12 people  plus their appetizer trays for 5 o'clock Happy Hour.

Don's Guide to the San Juans
Sun. 6/21: Roche Harbor (800-451-8910)
  • Make reservations beforehand or anchor in bay after clearing customs
  • Clear customs
  • Pick up supplies
  • Sun. 6/20 5:00 - Happy hour on boats or steak fry on party dock (if available)
Mon. 6/22 - Tues. 6/23: Reid Harbor (Stuart Is.)
  • Easy day trip since Reid is right across from Roche
  • Buy freshly made donuts before you leave for Reid
  • Leave Roche about 10:00 to catch buoys in Reid
  • Reid has 20 buoys and plenty of anchorage (all State Marine Parks buoys are $12US)
  • Reid also has a linear moorage system that will hold several boats
  • Activities include walking on the island’s trails especially to the old school house
  • Reid has a dock for dinghies and pump out station.
Wed. 6/24 - Thurs. 6/25: Sucia Is. (Echo Bay) Apprx. 15 mi.
  • Leave Reid between 8:00 - 9:00 to catch the current down Spieden
  • Echo Bay also has 2 linear moorage systems and 14 buoys plus anchorage space
  • Activities include walking on the island’s trails and ’scoping out’ the anchorage at Fossil Bay
  • Sucia can be a point of departure to head back to Pt. Roberts or Vancouver
Fri. 6/26 - Sat 6/27: Orcas Is. (Deer Hbr. 360-376-3037) Apprx. 12 mi.
  • Make reservations beforehand or there is limited anchorage in the bay
  • At noon we’ll have a bus ride around Orcas. It is a hop-on / hop-off bus ride with shopping in East Sound
  • There is a nice restaurant up the road from the marina if you don’t want to eat on the boat
  • This can be a departure point to Bedwell or Sidney for those going back to Canada
Sun. 6/28: Friday Hbr. 360-378-2688 Apprx. 6 mi.
  • Make reservations beforehand because there isn’t any anchorage
  • Shopping in town
  • This can also be a departure point if going back to Canada

San Juans Cruise Cont:
Mon. 6/29: Spencer Spit (Lopez Is.) Apprx. 8 mi.
  • 11 buoys at spit (8 north, 3 south)
  • Plenty of anchorage on south side
  • Activity is go to shore and walk around
Tues. 6/30: West Sound Orcas Is. Apprx. 8 mi.
  • Try to get a reciprocal at the Orcas Is. YC dock (nice pub across the road)
  • If no reciprocal, make reservations at West Sound Marina (360-376-2314)
  • If all else fails, go to Deer Hbr.
